story board/animatic

This first sheet will shows the introduction of the character and hopefully show some missing sanity.
In this sheet we see another person come and interrupt the bliss that the main character feels in his dream reality, so his broken mind tells him to hide and hope not to be disturbed again.
In this last sheet his mind has warped his thoughts think their are monsters trying to get him showing his hallucinogenic tendency. He reacts to this by finding a brick/rock nearby and readying himself to strike the other person; who he believes is a monster trying to kill him.

I think this shows the necessary amount and interest sparking for an opening and if executed well will show all convention of a psychological thriller that are to attract my target audience.

mood board

A mood board to show the mood of the film and try to show a feel of the film. i chose only the most dissalutioned thing i could find to try and represent the chaos and instability of the films feel. i then collected all the images in adobe Photoshop and edited them together.

These results show that i was correct in the choosing of may film target audience most like thrillers as they were the second most popular (comedies were the most popular) and psychological films. The best way to alert my target audience is the the internet with viral marketing campaigns like that of Avatar or The dark knight.

Own film treatment (summary of Film)

The main character is in a park; he is not fully aware of the real world. He is inside a bubble of his own creation. He is simply insane and hallucinogenic. What he sees changes in his mind and becomes something else; but he does not feel this is a problem and really enjoys living in his dream world of pure chaos and insanity. As the world around him changes the world in his head morphs into more and more extreme creations, these creations become more and disturbing and end up causing more problems for him. These problems range from a tree turning into a lollipop to a old woman turning into a demonic creation of pure evil that will consume the worlds hope and joy; so of course he has to kill it. Unfortunately, he walks past a church as it finishes mass and their stand an old woman chatting politely with the priest and a gable of other nice churchgoing folks; he sees this as the creature and its evil lieutenant surrounded by a dominion army.
So as any insane man would be picks up a large brick and smashes the skulls of all the evil creature. He then rushes to the police were he tells them of his "heroic deeds" in search of a reward, now as these creatures are actual old Christians and a vicar it is frowned upon by the local law enforcement. so they try to arrest him but he is still holding the brick and smashes their head too. He than begins a journey taking it upon himself to rid the world of all evils he find, and the police are also in pursuit as he is killing innocent people. He quickly begins to loose touch with reality seeing more and more of his dream world, and subsequently more demon thing that he kills with interesting and creative methods and weapons. Eventually he feel that there is too many evil demon things in the world to kill individually; so he searches Google and finds out how to make a very large bomb. He schemes how and where to plant the bomb for maximum impact when he gets rudely arrested by the police for mass murder and terrorism. He gets put in a institute for the mentally troubled. Unfortunately for the people of the local town he finds a group of like minded mental people in the ward. They begin to see him as a leader and form a mini-cult under him. This cult then charges the hospital freeing all the inmates and creating a mini army under his rule.

own film idea brainstrom

font research

The font used here is sepia toned, and in full caps it is not all one solid colour, it is a blend of whit and brown and has an aged affect; it is in thin letter italic lettering. It is a creepy and eerie looking cover.

This also uses a white and brown sepia filter to give the same aged effect, but this one does not have the same fading mould effect and uses a bold thicker font; this makes it seem stronger and gives off a more stable and protective feel rather than the creepy and eerie feel of the first.

This uses the same bold, thicker font as the previous one, but does not use the same sepia tone. In this they use a scattered and mix mash group of colours. This is the style i will  use as it is the most unstable looking and disconnected.

actors and prop research

For my opening I will be using 2 actors an inocent civilian and the main character. The main character will be Chris Robinson as the mentally unstable guy. And Willsquire as the innocent person who gets their heads smashed in with a brick. I chose Chris as he has a bit of a grunge look and looks like a future "crack" addict. I will not be needing allot of props for the actors to work with as it will be in a park or a street. I wont this dream world to look bright, colorful and like a story book; to give it a serial feel. Having the dream world simply made by warping the images and changing the contrast and Gama colour ratios it even less real, It will be child like world that could not possibly be real. It is a world of a warped reality, that will hopefully make the character seem very unstable; as he if  flickering in an of two very drastically different worlds.

Costume and Location research

There are no specific locations for the a psychological thriller, so can do it where ever is fit for my specific story. I am going to use combination of real world settings and basic mini stage settings made of card with basic block colors. for the real world setting i will need something dark and eerie to encourage a surreal and unease atmosphere. It needs to be a unique perspective of a common location; like a street at dusk or a field in mid winter instead of the classic imagining of a field in spring filled with life(then enhanced further later in editing). As my story is about questioning reality and conciseness i have chosen to have two of my main real world locations as a woodland and city street; they are two polar opposites in respects of human life and human presence. A woodland is void of most if not all human presence and a city is a hub of pure humanity.

The costumes will be kept to a minimum as i don't wont to include lots of actors (one at most) and the costume will not have to be very specific as there is no iconic clothing or costume for a mental unstable charters who are usually the main focus of psychological thrillers.

The main character will be wearing scruffy everyday clothing, eg a pair of jeans and a black hoodie.
This is my film opening location is forfills all requirments i need. :D

soundtrack research and conclusion

For my film i will need something odd and off beat. I need something non-copy write that reflect the mood of the film, it can be too distracting either, it needs to emphasise the visuals and not negate from them.
Two possible songs are, Darkest child var a or Foolishness and it will give a dark and melodic tone to the opening, this will be creepy, dark and sorrow full. This will enhance the psychopathic nature of the character.
If I wish to have a more quirky and happy mood to the opening it will use something like confounded (These are all non-copyright).
Having a lighter, happier song will make the opening a completely different piece to if it were to be a more serious film. If I use a happy up-beat song, this will make the character seem far more likable and less intense or insane, it will add a juxtaposition to the film as the visuals and the audio will not match, the disconnected choice of songs will make the character seem more uncaring and disconnected to humanity. This will make it seem less real and like a drama and have more of a comedy element. The song choice I pick will determine the elements of the film and the sub genre it is in. i wont to try and stay away from the comedy side of the and go toward the eerie psychopathic feel.

I choose to create my own soundtrack using ablton sound audio editing software, this allowed me have a sound track ideal for the mood of the clip. i choose to have it a darker more melodic sound to go with the dark and slow editing planed. i used a various of random sound and warped them into static fairly random and disconnected collaboration of sound. This dis-joined sound help it seem off key and makes the opening feel off key with the normal world.

Institution research - Twentieth Century Fox

Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation (Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation, with hyphen, from 1935 to 1985)—also known as 20th Century Fox, 20th Century Fox Pictures, styled as 20th CENTURY FOX, or simply 20th or Fox—is one of the six major American film studios as of 2001. Located in the Century City area of Los Angeles, just west of Beverly Hills, the studio is a subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation.

The company was founded on May 31, 1935, as the result of the merger of Fox Film Corporation, founded by William Fox in 1915, and Twentieth Century Pictures, founded in 1933 by Darryl F. Zanuck, Joseph Schenck, Raymond Griffith and William Goetz.

Twentieth Century Fox's most popular film franchises include Star Wars, X-Men, Ice Age, Rio, Die Hard, Predator, Alien, Planet of the Apes, Home Alone, plus famous TV shows such as Batman, M*A*S*H, The X-Files, Cops, In Living Color, The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, American Dad!, The Cleveland Show, and 24. Among the most famous actresses to come out of this studio were Shirley Temple, who was 20th Century Fox's first film star, Betty Grable, Gene Tierney, Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield. The studio also contracted the first African-American cinema star, Dorothy Dandridge.

20th century fox are seen funding and supporting a massive variety of films from all genres and styles they are typical associated with big budget blockbusters and often big action films. Having a institute like fox support a film will give the film allot more credibility and gravitas than allot of other film companies. They are extremely widely known and there film logo will make any film seem worth the money and time it takes to go to the cinema; it magerly appeals to my target audience as a massive international film company, that people know spend allot on the films, and therefore expect a big action film that is gripping and fun to watch.

Institution research - Pixar Animation Studios

Pixar Animation Studios, or simply Pixar is a computer animation film studio based in Emeryville, California. The studio is best known for its CGI-animated feature films created with PhotoRealistic RenderMan, its own implementation of the industry-standard RenderMan image-rendering application programming interface used to generate high-quality images. Pixar began in 1979 as the Graphics Group, part of the computer division of Lucasfilm before its spin-out as a corporation in 1986 with funding by Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Jobs, who became its majority shareholder. The Walt Disney Company bought Pixar in 2006 at a valuation of $7.4 billion, a transaction which made Jobs Disney's largest shareholder.

Pixar has produced thirteen feature films, beginning with Toy Story (1995). It was followed by A Bug's Life (1998), Toy Story 2 (1999), Monsters, Inc. (2001), Finding Nemo (2003), The Incredibles (2004), Cars (2006), Ratatouille (2007), WALL-E (2008), Up (2009), Toy Story 3 (2010), Cars 2 (2011), and Brave (2012). Twelve of the films have received both critical and financial success, with the notable exception being Cars 2, which, while commercially successful, has received substantially less praise than Pixar's other productions. The studio has also produced several short films. As of February 2012, its feature films have made over $7 billion worldwide, with its $602 million average gross by far the highest of any studio in the industry. Three of Pixar's films—Finding Nemo, Up, and Toy Story 3—are among the 50 highest-grossing films of all time, and all of Pixar's films are among the 50 highest-grossing animated films, with Toy Story 3 being the all-time highest, grossing over $1 billion worldwide.

The studio has earned 26 Academy Awards, seven Golden Globe Awards, and eleven Grammy Awards, among many other awards and acknowledgments. Since the award's inauguration in 2001, most of Pixar's films have been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, with six winning; Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, WALL-E, Up, and Toy Story 3. Up and Toy Story 3 are two of only three animated films to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. On September 6, 2009, executives John Lasseter, Brad Bird, Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton, and Lee Unkrich were presented with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement by the Biennale Venice Film Festival. The award was presented by Lucasfilm founder George Lucas.

Pixar have rarely done film similar to mine in story, plot or style so they may not accredit the film, but are still a widely know film company that could use a film of this kind to get out of there perceived view of a childrens film institute; much like Disney have done with films like pirates of the Caribbean

Institution research- Bad Robot

Bad Robot Productions (formerly known as Bad Robot Studios) is an American film and television production company owned by J. J. Abrams. It is responsible for the television series Alias, Lost, What About Brian, Six Degrees, Fringe, Undercovers, Person of Interest, Alcatraz, Revolution, and the feature length films Cloverfield, Star Trek, Super 8, and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

Bad Robot was originally part of Touchstone Television, but has moved with J. J. Abrams to Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Television, after his contract with Touchstone had expired in 2006. Bad Robot produced Lost in association with ABC Studios, formerly Touchstone Television. The two companies jointly produced Six Degrees and What About Brian.

Abrams is Chairman/
Chief Executive Officer, and Bryan Burk serves as Executive Vice President of the company.

The
production logo has appeared since 2001, featuring a red rectangular headed robot running through a meadow silhouetted until it appears suddenly in front of the camera, followed by voices provided by two of Abrams' children, Henry and Gracie Abrams, saying "Bad robot!"

Bad robot are a smaller company with a smaller budget that some others but are still well known and general considered for many psychological films. they would be an ideal institute for my film genre.

Certificate research

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), originally British Board of Film Censor, is a non-government organization funded the film industry and responsible for the national classification and censorship of films within the UK. it has a statutory(prescribed or authorized by statute) requirement to classify videos, DVDs and some video games under the Video recording Act of 2001.

U - U is for universal meaning anyone of any age group may watch the film and is generally (but not always) aimed at young children around 4 yrs old plus. As all young children are different we don't know exactly what will upset them so always the theme in these film are of a positive and moral nature. References to drugs (which is very rare in U classed films) or discrimination are strongly disapproved of and an educational element could be implemented. No sexual nudity, but natural nudity can be acceptable like for instance a man may have his top off.

PG - PG for Parental Guidance and is similar to U in the way its for everyone, but if a parent were to show this to their 4 yr old child they may want to view the content first to make sure nothing too rude or upsetting for the child to see. Bad language is unlikely in PG films, but if there are any they should be subtle in the way that they cannot be strong language and not offensive to viewers either. No sexual nudity but natural nudity is acceptable (like in U films)

12(A) - 12A meaning persons 12 yrs and over may view the film is a more grown up film in terms that a more adolescent/adult feel is give to the film. The 'A' part of the classification relates to Cinemas only, in that persons who are 12 wanting to see this film must be accompanied by an adult of 18 years old or higher, however may purchase a 12 film on their own. If references to drugs or drug taking are raised in the film they should be infrequent and may have an educational reason or purpose. Moderate language is acceptable but very infrequent, eg 'fuck' can be used but only once. And as far as nudity goes there is strictly no genital nudity but other nudity can be discreet.

15 - No persons under 15 may view this film at a cinema, rent or buy to watch any film rated 15 (or 18 for that fact). Discriminatory references mustn't be endorsed by the film. Drug themes are acceptable but in no way should it glamorize or encourage drug use. Language is okay for this certificate and can be used in a more stronger context, eg 'fuck' or 'cunt' are the sort of words you can expect. Nudity is allowed only without strong detail to genital areas. As well as this sexual activity can be expected in some certain films but still with out strong detail

18 - Only suitable for persons ages 18 + may view this film anywhere. Most uses of bad language can be expected but is monitored for its extremity and some uses of language used may cause offence to some viewers. Explicit images of sexual activity is permitted but again not to extreme, eg genital nudity is permitted but to a degree.

I will be looking to make mine a 12 or 15 as most for the popular thrillers and other psychological films are in this rating bracket making it accessible and appealing to my target audience.

Target Audience Research

All these films have an audience of between 15-24 year as the majority viewing, with a second highest of 25-34 years the are primarily male audience. This has show that are target audience should be men between 15-24 years. I can target this age range by having my actors of the same rough age as the target audience, to be make them relate able it has to be a relativity exiting and interesting plot with a lot happening, both visually and background extras that are only noticeable if you look for them. It should has a relativity cool looking setting that has the capability to connotate something darker and more disturbed while the denotations are relatively normal.
I intend to appeal to my target audience by creating a character with a darker depth to them, my main character must be a male to appeal to my target audience which is mostly male and be some sort of dark drama thriller. As I don't have a budget i cant do a big blockbuster film so i need to have depth in my filming techniques and story as depth and a darker story is the key similar feature in all these films.

Summary of Research - Psychological thriller

First I picked a genre for my opening sequence; I chose to have a thriller as it is such a broad genre it can be adapted to many different story ideas. So I then researched different types of thrillers, and decided to do a Psychological thriller as this can be kept relatively simple to do effectively and without budget to spend on locations. They do not require many specific props or special effects like explosions, guns or big chase scenes. Although the iconography for some genres are more tasking then in a psychological thriller, there are still some important things needed to be factored in. We need to show a broken soul, to show this in-depth view of the characters Broken identity; things like a mirror are perfect for this.

Psychological thriller is a specific sub-genre of the broad ranged thriller with heavy focus on the unstable emotional states of characters, in combination with mystery and thriller. However, it often incorporates elements from the mystery and drama genre, along with the typical traits of the thriller genre. In addition to drama and mystery, many psychological thrillers contain elements of, and often overlap with, the horror genre, particularly psychological horror.

Thriller sub-genre research and conventions

This is a mind-map showing the research i collected of the types of Thrillers and there conventions.
I decided which sub-genre of thrillers I would attempt, I chose a psychological thriller; then I when in to more detail about what makes a psychological thriller. We researched every thing we would need to include such as iconography, style and character types.

Bunraku - Action Thriller

In the opening the audience see a collection of origami paper animals telling the story of how the world of the film came to be. The bold and vibrant colours used make it seem very serial and help promote the films pop-up story book style. The fact that you can see the people moving the animal puppets in the back morph suits adds more of a theatrical feel and less Hollywood movie magic. The music going over the entire opening sequence is an odd beat, but it fits the strangeness of the visual. They have shown the evolution of life through a swift change in the creatures, in both there size and complexity; the change in environment is shown through a change in lighting the use of different colour tones and the luminosity of the light. to enhance this still they have used some 2D animation with the paper origami in the meteor; when it strikes the creatures die and the world goes dark. This is the end of the theatrical portion and begins a human world ("The dark of man" as said by the narrator).
When the 2D animation begins the narrator talks about how man is no different to the creature who died before them and begins to talk about mans insatiable need to kill and destroy. The 2D animation uses the same method to show the evolution of man as the evolution on the creatures. they show the rise and fall of civilizations. The 2D animation still has the origami style and a rough triangular background.

Pulp Fiction - Crime Thriller

Pulp Fiction

In the opening of Pulp Fiction the viewer is immediately drawn into and fully immersed in theses charters lives. The man is smoking in the booth with his leg up on bench, his body language shows he doesn't care about rules and what he is meant to do; he is a charismatic leader type. The woman sitting opposite has her arms into her body, and her hands are in claw like position, she is possibly uncomfortable as she is in a defensive position. She looks weak; she is not the leader in the couple. The location is a classic American cafe with red leather booths and rounded island table fixed to the wall.

At 00:42 we see a mid-close up of the woman; we see her smiling and being an ideal customer to the waitress. See thanks her for he coffee, the atmosphere is calm, collected and generally nice. The use of a sepia filter gives the scene a warm, cosy feel.

At 01:00 the main character is no longer calm and relaxed; he is leaning forward, getting closer to the woman and enforcing his words. he is explaining a plan about prime places to rob that people just don't rob. This discussion is a juxtaposition as the location and nicety of the woman and the warm feel from the filter. As the conversation is taboo you would not expect it to be spoken about this openly in public.

Suddenly the shot changes from a 2 shot to a series of close ups between the two characters, the previously nice woman becomes aggressive and looks far more psychopathic. The man and the woman lean in close increasing the intensity of the conversation dramatically.

The man then pulls out a gun placing it on the table and the seriousness of the situation becomes clear. Finally they kiss over the table and the gun, but this lovely moment is crushed by the final scene.

The final scene shows the couple yelling pointing there guns at the customers. The previously passive woman has suddenly become a loud, extremely aggressive and threatening to kill the customers. This dramatic change in how to woman acts is a shock and completely changes how you view the character.

The Talented Mr. Ripley - Pycological Thriller

The music used throughout is a relatively slow melodic tune on a piano coupled with a female vocalist giving an eerie and mysterious scene of discomfort to the scene before the first piece of film even appears. The dark nature of the music and the lyrics like, surrender your soul, cast into the dark and branded with a mark; gives you a clear feel for the film. Within the first 30 seconds, before an actor has appeared or a scene has been set you understand the nature of the film.

After the production company logos disappear at 0:30 there is a pause of just music and darkness for the next 3 seconds; then out of the darkness a strip is revealed showing you a glimpse of your first image from the film. You see a strip of a man’s face focusing on the eyes which appear solemn and deep in thought.

As the second and third strip is revealed you see more of the characters face, you can see he is frowning in contempt not just depression as the camera pans around him (adding to the deep contemplation look). The names of the important people who worked on the film are put in as a strip is peeling away.

1:07 all the darkness and confusion has been peeled away piece by piece and you have a full scene setting. It appears to be a hotel room with bland, yellow walls and a lamp fixed to the wall, also in a bland, dull, yellow; this dull, uninspiring room in keeps with slow perpetual mood. This mood is enhanced by the fact that you can no longer see the main characters face as it is now shrouded in darkness, reflecting his emotions.

At 1:11 the title appears, the title animation and font is in different proportions and is all not aliened with each other. This shows instability and again reflects on the films story. Before the word talented appears  it flickers through many other adjectives, like intelligent, each in a different colour and font, showing the many qualities of Mr Ripley. The speed at which they flicker between on another again shows instability and indecisiveness. But then it settles on the word talented in a red font and the other word fade out leaving only the word talented; meaning this is his most significant and best quality, perhaps all the other word shown add up to make the sum of talented.

At 1:25 we fade to see man playing the same tune that has been playing the length of the opening. The female vocals have faded out and we hear a narrative from a male character, talking about his regrets. At 1:30 the camera has paned upward to reveal the mane playing the tune is same man who we saw sitting in the room before; but now he is outside, in a suit with glasses and combed hair, not looking anything like the depressed man from earlier.

The camera then tracks around to show a classy group of well depressed people listening to a new female vocalist accompanied by the same tune on the piano, suggesting a switch in roles as the vocals and attitude of the character changed. The older man is standing at the front of the crowd, with what we can assume is his wife, this position of front row the the entertainment shows his power of seniority over the other guests; this is his party or he is a guest of honor. The names of people who worked on the film shown at the foot in a green tinted box.

Then the camera flips to see the skyline a city behind the singer and our main character showing the location. Now the credits appear length ways in a blue tinted box; these tinted boxes are iconic of the modern upper-class styles of the 50’s giving a clue to the timeframe in which the film is set.

We then see the camera cut to a shot of an older man who we saw earlier was at the front of the crowd watching, this introduces another character of some kind of significance, as he is the focus of the shot.

Finally it ends with an extreme long shot showing the group of people on a rooftop garden with a view of the city and a park. The grand piano, the way in which they people are dressed and the location of this party suggest a wealth person must be throwing it and the main charter is somehow connected to him/her if he has attended this exclusive party.

Summary of Research - Thriller

This is the result of my research into what a thriller is and how it differs from other genre. I used the site wordel to present this. The larger the word the more significant the word is to the genre.

Thriller is a broad genre of literature, film, and television programming that uses suspense, tension and excitement as the main elements, Thrillers heavily stimulate the viewer's moods giving them a high level of anticipation, ultra-heightened expectation, uncertainty, surprise, anxiety and/or terror. Thriller films tend to be adrenaline-rushing, gritty, rousing and fast-paced. Literary devices such as red herrings, plot twists and cliffhangers are used extensively. A thriller is a villain-driven plot, whereby he or she presents obstacles that the protagonist must overcome.

Napoleon dynamite

Napoleon dynamite, the film opening is dull, slow and relatively uninteresting, all the colours are either dark murky colours or faded and tattered. This reflects the atmosphere of the whole film perfectly.
The credits are written in the food with the food being served in a first person view, the food as well is extremely bland looking and unappetising but just right out disgusting. Credits are also in some average daily objects like a library card and homework book, all in a dull and mondane mannor, this lets us into the character of the parson that we are seeing through the eyes of. We learnt he is a student at a high shool and see a photo ID of him looking gormless; we learn he likes to draw fantasy creatures and simmilar thing draw very poorly, the fact that they are draw in such a child like way show us a glimpse in simple minded view of the person. we also see a folder made clearly for children with spce ships and planets printed on it which enhances the child like view of the character. He also sees some lightly more interesting things like a tinfoil nija star and a aliens stopers ID these all tell us alot about the nature of the character.

The girl with the dragon tattoo

The girl with the dragon tattoo opening titles the audiance start by seeing a a series of flashes and a glimps of variouse items. things like a syth and scales from a lizard or snake, these are typically seen a scary and haunting objets, the are bad omens; the use of them in these short flashes it to start you thinking of danger, pain, suffering or death. we then see droplets of black liquid clumping together and then a see of black liquid, possibly symbolising a endless expance of darkness. the black liquid then begins to consume variouse items like a whip and a coin; the liquid is collecting together and becoming greater. the whip is a sympol of dominace and the coin is money, money is power; this could sujest that the black liquid is corupting power and those who have controll over others. the title then apeare, but is flooded by the liquid very quickly. Then th audiance see a Woman laying down being consumed and drowned by the liquid. The liquid flows throught a keyborad and it infects it and we see a it flowing through lots of nooks and cranys. It is infecting everything that is spewing from the mouth. We then see a flame torch, and a group of cables going tward a big lump of black liquid. Then the flaming torch hits the black liquid and it ignites, burning away the liquid and iluminating the objects. it burn a person and an eye, sujesting the corupt veiw is cleared, and the corupt people get burned away. Then a pheonix is seen bursting out of the black liquid signifying, rising from the ashes. Then a black flower blooms from a swirling mess of thorns. A man is then seen drowning in the liquid, a fist punches someone in the face repeatedly and a bug is bursting out of an eye. A group of hands then cover and cage in the person. Then a woman screams releasing a swarm of flys, showing the evil being released; then the people begin to melt and get torn apart. This is showing the coruption beging destroyed, and the fact that the whole sequence is in the black liquid makes it seem very seriel and unnatural; it is oil and completely blacks out the light. this reflects the dark nature of the film. the flames burning away the oil is a reprisentation of the light destroying the dark.

The Shawshank Redemption - Cime Dama

In the opening of The Shawshank Redemption the audience go through a door and are confrunted with a point of view shot of 5 men well dressed in suits siting at a large table looking out at the viewer. This is a very dawnting shot to open to and the lighting used means you cant see the faces of the men; making them a group of powerfulmen wityhout an identity. The sets of papers and sheets show that thesemen are official and somhow important.
-0:02-
We then see a blackman has walked through in a old flat cap and wearing prisson clothing with a number on the left breast poocket. This gives us a sence of location and what these menmight be doing here. It is a prison and the 5 men sitting in the suits must be somekind of parole group, to decide if the prisoner is worthy of release.
-0:10-
The prisoner sits down and confirms his name, he looks afraid but humble. He knows the signifigance of this talk. he is the less powerful figure in the situation. He is in the full light from the windows looking out at them, he is on display. The room he is in look nice it does not look like a prison but a home. There is a teapot and cups in the backround. There is a photo in a frame nexrt to the large wooden door. It is a classic styled house. The men sitting down then comfirms hes already spent out 20yers of a life sentence. your view of this prisomer then changes, he looses the humble inocence in the eyes of the audiance. He is asked if be belives be has been rehabilitated, he then gives a hubling speech about how he has changed, this then puts the audince back in the view of a humble man. But the sternlooking men decide to denie him, he slams down the stamp on his papers and its done. We then see the same man standing outside. his head is slumped and as he puts on his flat cap he walks up a set of steal stairs. We then see more men in the same blue suits. He then walks up to a group of men sitting at a set of bleachers. The men ask if he has been given his freedom. The setting is bleek and grey, the road is cracked and litered with potholes. There is a large brick building around in the distance with large factory style towers. This is a harsh and depresing environmnet. As the men stand up they walk out across a dusty courtyard filled with other prisoners, the black man who came out of the building is leading the group, he has composed himself and walks with preseces and power not a depressed and humble man anymore. This show the dinamics of prison life and how he needs to be viewed by others in the miniture prison environment.
 -1'40-
We see another smaller man comeup to him and the shot goes to a long shot were you can see the height diffrence between them, this is showing the power of this man and the fact that someone came up to HIM make you know he is signifigant and is more important than the standard prisoner.
  - 2-10 -
We then see a full view of the entire building, giving a sense of the scale of the building. As a grey 50s style bus comes up the road, giving a idea of the time set, meaning the audience have a full idea of the setting. This exteme long shot then turns into a birds eye view of the building and the courtyard, the prisoners then all swarm to the gate as the tower alarms them of a new set of prisoners. We then see the inside of the bus and a group of men all looking out the windows at the prion, and its ocupants. The camera then focuses on one man sitting at the back staring blankly at nothing. The men in the bus are all wearing civilian cloths not the classic prison ware. The man we focus in on is in a suit, meaning he has not had any oppertunity to change and his hair is messy and ungroomed, he has not had a chance to go home and wash since his arrest. the fact that he is in a suit means he had a respectable job not petty criminal activites, raising the question of what crime he comited The first group of prisoners move to a high wall to leen up against and watch the new prisoners coming In. they stand up on there perch very comfortable and with ease, it is familier and they have watched from there many times. In the final scene you see a line of armed gards, standing firm in smart uniforms, through the front window of the truck. This is the first view of the prison the new prisoners get. It is a scary veiw with these guards being the only seperation between them and the pisoners. The whole of the opening gives a scence of dawnting, confiding but vast space. You feel as if its you are traped in this space. There is a lot of room but you still feel as if you cant move. The prison atmosphere has been captured very well.

Own Arlington Road Practice Video and Evaluation

Evaluation

The use of sound has created a uneasy and odd atmosphere much like the original with its inaudible sounds and irregular rhythm. It queues up nicely with the visuals helping to link the whole piece. We tired to include many shot from the original in the same way they done or if the shot could not be recreated we substituted it for a shot that had the same effect. The editing was done in the same style as the original using inverted/negative effects and grey or sepia tones, we also cut between shots quickly to add a scene of confusion, these helped the misen scene as it built on the atmosphere created by the music. The shots were all done in the school ground to try and get a simple everyday location, as in the original. To improve this work i would have more time to edit and extend the clip as it is very short at  the moment but it still shows the same creepy view of the mundane world as does the original.

Analysis of Arlington Road (1999)

The use of movement creates a first person response for the viewer, you feel as if you are there and viewing it with your own eyes. The static shots create an air of stillness and cold. The grey and negative effects used make an innocent and everyday clip seem like a dark twisted nightmare. the juxtapositions used, like the children playing switching to an empty swing set, gives the idea of the innocents of children being lost or the children are "gone"; this with the sol-um music gives a empty feels to the clip. The frame transitions are fast and erratic with no viable pattern, they used a dog siting calmly and then switch straight to a close up of an aggressive barking dog, the instant flip to extreme aggression is unsettling. the zooming and position of some of the shots, looking through fences and bushes is creepy and makes the viewer seem less significant, as if you don't belong. the glowing eyes and teeth of people shot with the invert effects make them seem demonic and in-human creatures. Some shots linger and are seen for longer making them more significant, and the resulting scene becomes a more significant change.

Mise en Scene - Napoleon dynamite

Mise en Scene - Napoleon dynamite

Mise en Scene

Its set in a dull, plane, flat front garden. A small detached bungalow, with dull red brick and red shutters. A crack pathway with cut grass, no flowers or any colour other than red, gray and green. This all gives the impression of a quiet still location, most likely the characters parents house. The dullness of the scene suggests that there is nothing in this location.

There are old flower pots, a stailitie dish and some grasse sugetsting its not cared for greatly and the person(s) living their dont care how the house is seen. The charcter is holding a set of books, suesting he attends a school, if this is true than he would be waiting and looking for a bus to school; very odd as the charcter is clearly too old to be taking a school bus and attending a school.

The characters hair is a curly ginger perm, a old 80s style. He is wearing a old cheap-looking shirt tucked into his jean trousers, he has ugh boots and wears glasses, he is a stereotypical nerdy school going kid, but he is clearly not a child or even a teen. His clothes could be from the 80s and the film could be set then, or he could just wear old hand-me-downs from the 80s suggesting he is poor or doesn't care how hes viewed.

The charcter has a blank expresion looking away from camera(the audience is viewing him and he is not making any link to the audience.) His sholders and back are slouched, he doesnt care about what he is doing and what he is watching doesnt interest him, if he's watching anything.

It is a long shot with only him and his house in the frame, no movement or anything to distract from him - He is the main character and the focus of the shot. The house is just as dull as he appears to be; he is matching and blending to his surroundings.

It is shot in high key lighting to make it see more natural, true to life, more average and more boring. There is a grey fillter to make any remaining colour darker and more average, no stimulating clear colours only faded.
