Mise en Scene - Napoleon dynamite
Mise en Scene
Its set in a dull, plane, flat front garden. A small detached bungalow, with dull red brick and red shutters. A crack pathway with cut grass, no flowers or any colour other than red, gray and green. This all gives the impression of a quiet still location, most likely the characters parents house. The dullness of the scene suggests that there is nothing in this location.
There are old flower pots, a stailitie dish and some grasse sugetsting its not cared for greatly and the person(s) living their dont care how the house is seen. The charcter is holding a set of books, suesting he attends a school, if this is true than he would be waiting and looking for a bus to school; very odd as the charcter is clearly too old to be taking a school bus and attending a school.
The characters hair is a curly ginger perm, a old 80s style. He is wearing a old cheap-looking shirt tucked into his jean trousers, he has ugh boots and wears glasses, he is a stereotypical nerdy school going kid, but he is clearly not a child or even a teen. His clothes could be from the 80s and the film could be set then, or he could just wear old hand-me-downs from the 80s suggesting he is poor or doesn't care how hes viewed.
The charcter has a blank expresion looking away from camera(the audience is viewing him and he is not making any link to the audience.) His sholders and back are slouched, he doesnt care about what he is doing and what he is watching doesnt interest him, if he's watching anything.
It is a long shot with only him and his house in the frame, no movement or anything to distract from him - He is the main character and the focus of the shot. The house is just as dull as he appears to be; he is matching and blending to his surroundings.
It is shot in high key lighting to make it see more natural, true to life, more average and more boring. There is a grey fillter to make any remaining colour darker and more average, no stimulating clear colours only faded.
