The use of sound has created a uneasy and odd atmosphere much like the original with its inaudible sounds and irregular rhythm. It queues up nicely with the visuals helping to link the whole piece. We tired to include many shot from the original in the same way they done or if the shot could not be recreated we substituted it for a shot that had the same effect. The editing was done in the same style as the original using inverted/negative effects and grey or sepia tones, we also cut between shots quickly to add a scene of confusion, these helped the misen scene as it built on the atmosphere created by the music. The shots were all done in the school ground to try and get a simple everyday location, as in the original. To improve this work i would have more time to edit and extend the clip as it is very short at the moment but it still shows the same creepy view of the mundane world as does the original.

Analysis of Arlington Road (1999)

The use of movement creates a first person response for the viewer, you feel as if you are there and viewing it with your own eyes. The static shots create an air of stillness and cold. The grey and negative effects used make an innocent and everyday clip seem like a dark twisted nightmare. the juxtapositions used, like the children playing switching to an empty swing set, gives the idea of the innocents of children being lost or the children are "gone"; this with the sol-um music gives a empty feels to the clip. The frame transitions are fast and erratic with no viable pattern, they used a dog siting calmly and then switch straight to a close up of an aggressive barking dog, the instant flip to extreme aggression is unsettling. the zooming and position of some of the shots, looking through fences and bushes is creepy and makes the viewer seem less significant, as if you don't belong. the glowing eyes and teeth of people shot with the invert effects make them seem demonic and in-human creatures. Some shots linger and are seen for longer making them more significant, and the resulting scene becomes a more significant change.
Mise en Scene - Napoleon dynamite
Mise en Scene - Napoleon dynamite
Mise en Scene
Its set in a dull, plane, flat front garden. A small detached bungalow, with dull red brick and red shutters. A crack pathway with cut grass, no flowers or any colour other than red, gray and green. This all gives the impression of a quiet still location, most likely the characters parents house. The dullness of the scene suggests that there is nothing in this location.
There are old flower pots, a stailitie dish and some grasse sugetsting its not cared for greatly and the person(s) living their dont care how the house is seen. The charcter is holding a set of books, suesting he attends a school, if this is true than he would be waiting and looking for a bus to school; very odd as the charcter is clearly too old to be taking a school bus and attending a school.
The characters hair is a curly ginger perm, a old 80s style. He is wearing a old cheap-looking shirt tucked into his jean trousers, he has ugh boots and wears glasses, he is a stereotypical nerdy school going kid, but he is clearly not a child or even a teen. His clothes could be from the 80s and the film could be set then, or he could just wear old hand-me-downs from the 80s suggesting he is poor or doesn't care how hes viewed.
The charcter has a blank expresion looking away from camera(the audience is viewing him and he is not making any link to the audience.) His sholders and back are slouched, he doesnt care about what he is doing and what he is watching doesnt interest him, if he's watching anything.
It is a long shot with only him and his house in the frame, no movement or anything to distract from him - He is the main character and the focus of the shot. The house is just as dull as he appears to be; he is matching and blending to his surroundings.
It is shot in high key lighting to make it see more natural, true to life, more average and more boring. There is a grey fillter to make any remaining colour darker and more average, no stimulating clear colours only faded.
What is a titles and opening sequence?
6 feet under title and opening
Six feet under is all shot in a grey or sepia tone, this
makes it seem dull and dredgey. The imagery used all ssuggest death, things
like a crow cawing and going though a tunnel toward the light are used multiple
times. The imagery is a contrast to the music played which is upbeat and
cheery. It makes you curious as to the tone and mood of the show, because what
you see and hear are so very different. The use of shot montaging, gives
lots of information of the subjuct matter, but can make it less clear. The
names of all the major people who worked on the show are put into the
sequence as physical objects (a name tag on a corpses toe.) rather than just
floating in dead space, they interact with the sequence more and you take more
notice of who worked on the show. The title is only seen at the end
of the sequence after all the credits have been shown. I would expect it
to be a relatively happy show on a darker subject matter.
Scott pilgram vs the world
The camera zooms out to a serial point, giving you an idea of how strange the camerawork in the film actually is. All text shown is shakey a done in a comic book style, relating to the origins of the story. It has dialog, and the majority of the sequence is not filmed camera work; instead there is a series a bright flashing images of stars, bombs and sound waves. The images shown reflect what you hear, the song played is just as manic and loud. This bombardment of the senses gives a feeling of major confusion and gets you on the same "off beat" as the movie.
Preliminary task and Evaluation
Evaluation
Did you achieve continuity editing and demonstrate a match on action, a shot reverse shot, and the 180 degree rule?support your answers with examples from your video of what has worked well and what could be improved?
We mostly archived continuity editing, we showed match on action, a shot reverse shot and followed the 180 degree rule. The first shots where he opens the door and walks through smoothly transitions from shot to shot and is continuous. It is all shot abiding by the 180 degree rule. The cut of the to characters sitting down was shot poorly and the we were forced to cut the clip at the wrong point.
Discuss any mistakes you made - did you have to re-film anything? if so why.
We had to re-film the first clip of the character walking to ward the door. The first time we filmed it we accidentally cut the top of the charters head out of the frame.
Explain what you learnt about:
1.Camera work
I learnt to create the shots abiding by the 180 degree rule and to frame the scene in thirds.
2.Using camera and tripod
I learnt to steady the camera with a tripod and how to keep shake to a minimum.
3.Imovie HD set up, editing and sharing
Editing video with Imovie HD was a new experience and i have learnt how to cut and separate clips, I learnt to edit the sound separate to the clip and how to share the clip online fully edited.
4.Uploading to YouTube
I had previously never uploaded to YouTube before but the process was basic and easy to grasp.
Why is https://www.google.co.uk/it important to follow the setup procedures for storing and saving your work?
So the raw version stays intact and separate to the edited, to ensure there is no loss of data if something is wrongfully deleted or lost due to an unforeseeable incident like a power cut.
In what ways do you feel this task has helped prepare you for the main task (opening two minutes of a feature film
It has taught me some of the skills i will be needing to use and let me try them out before hand so i know were i need to improve. I was not aware beforehand of certain barriers that will need to be surpassed and this has let me know what to expect and what to prepare for.
What have you learnt about working in groups, and time management?
In a group having assigned roles and duties help time management, it means no one is ever just waiting to do something, you all have a task to do. This maximises the amount that gets done with multiple tasks being completed rather than all people working on one task together.
